Accent Modification
Accent modification, also called accent reduction or pronunciation training, is a specialized service that helps individuals speak with greater clarity and confidence in their target language. Whether you are a non-native English speaker seeking to be better understood in professional settings, or a professional who wants to refine your pronunciation for public speaking or media appearances, our speech-language pathologists provide personalized coaching to help you communicate more effectively while honoring your linguistic identity.
What Is Accent Modification?
An accent is a natural feature of speech that reflects a person's linguistic background, regional origin, or cultural identity. Having an accent is not a disorder; it is a normal variation of speech. Accent modification is therefore an elective service, not a medical treatment. It is appropriate when an individual's accent interferes with their ability to be understood by listeners, affects their professional advancement, or causes them personal frustration.
Accent modification therapy is grounded in the science of phonetics and phonology. A speech-language pathologist analyzes the specific sound patterns, stress patterns, intonation contours, and rhythm features of the client's speech and compares them to the target dialect. Therapy then focuses on the features that have the greatest impact on intelligibility and listener perception.
It is important to emphasize that the goal of accent modification is not to eliminate a person's accent entirely or to suggest that their natural speech is inferior. The goal is to give the individual a wider range of pronunciation options so that they can choose how to speak in different contexts. Many clients find that improving clarity in a few key areas, such as specific consonant sounds, word stress patterns, or intonation contours, dramatically improves how well they are understood.
Signs and Symptoms
Accent modification is not driven by symptoms of a disorder but by the individual's personal or professional goals. People seek accent modification services for a variety of reasons, and there is no clinical threshold that must be met. If your accent is affecting your ability to communicate as effectively as you would like, this service may be right for you.
The following are common experiences that lead individuals to seek accent modification support.
How We Help
Our accent modification program begins with a comprehensive accent analysis. We record a speech sample that includes reading passages, word lists targeting specific sound contrasts, and spontaneous conversational speech. We analyze the sample for segmental features (individual consonant and vowel sounds) and suprasegmental features (stress, rhythm, intonation, rate, and connected speech patterns such as linking, reduction, and assimilation).
Based on the analysis, we create a prioritized treatment plan that targets the features with the greatest impact on intelligibility and listener perception. Research shows that suprasegmental features, particularly stress and intonation, often have a larger effect on perceived accent strength than individual sound errors. We therefore address these prosodic features alongside segmental targets.
Therapy uses a variety of evidence-based techniques including phonetic placement instruction (explicit teaching of how to position the articulators for target sounds), auditory discrimination training (learning to hear the difference between the client's productions and the target), minimal pair practice (contrasting words that differ by one sound), and extensive practice with connected speech at increasing levels of complexity.
We incorporate technology throughout the program. Visual feedback tools, including spectrograms and pitch displays, allow clients to see their speech patterns in real time and compare them to target models. We provide customized practice materials, including audio recordings, written exercises, and apps, so that clients can practice efficiently between sessions.
For corporate clients and groups, we offer workplace communication coaching that includes accent modification alongside presentation skills, professional communication strategies, and cross-cultural communication awareness. These programs can be delivered individually or in small groups.
What to Expect in Therapy
The initial accent analysis session takes approximately 60 minutes. We record and analyze your speech, discuss your communication goals and the contexts where you most want to improve, and outline a recommended treatment plan. You receive a written summary of the analysis identifying your specific target areas.
Therapy sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes, once or twice weekly, for a program lasting 12 to 16 weeks. Each session introduces or refines specific pronunciation targets, provides extensive guided practice, and assigns structured homework for independent practice. Consistent practice between sessions is essential for making lasting changes to habitual speech patterns.
We measure progress through pre- and post-program speech recordings, intelligibility ratings by unfamiliar listeners, and client self-assessment of communication confidence. Most clients report noticeable improvement in clarity and confidence within the first four to six weeks of consistent practice. The skills you develop in accent modification are yours to keep, and many clients continue to refine their pronunciation independently after completing the formal program.
